Joy Barnes: Joy Barnes

I fisrt met Danny while working for State of Kansas SRS/Youth Services/CETU....what a caring and loving individual. Quick to smile and add an encouraging word. After moving to another job and CETU's closing....I kept in contact with Danny when I and/or family stopped in at Tortilla Jack's. Danny always had a greeting and a smile to share. He loved his work and the people around him. What a caring person. God blessed us all with Danny's presence and he will be missed. Joy (Barnes) Willey and Family

Danny was a great friend and my supervisor at 1 time. He was very fair, truthful and always funny. I just tried to go to the service but the obituary says it is on 5252 SW 29th Street & I could not find it. I now have looked up the Church online and it is on 19th Street. I am so sorry to miss his service. My regards go to his family and especially his wonderful Tortilla Jacks family. Thank You -Romy Mastin ~ Romy Mastin, Topeka, Kansas |

Walking into tortilla jacks today was not the same, As I read they would be closing for a memorial service, I just proceeded on thinking nothing of it, as I continued into the lobby, my heart sunk, seeing the picture of a man that I have been seeing at this establishment since I was a child, I am so sad about this, my heart breaks, I have been going to the restauraunt since I was a kid, and lived in the area since I was 16, sometimes that was all I could afford, but I will continue the tradition, and he will be there in presence

Andra Smith: Andra Smith

We paid tribute to a friend and co worker last night. It was a bittersweet night. We got our chance to say goodbye, but in no way will he ever be forgotten. We shared some stories and a few laughs. I don't think there is a person that knew Dan that doesn't have a story to share. Tortilla Jacks will never be the same without him there. I don't know if my heart will be the same without him either. ~ Andra Smith, Topeka, Kansas

Dan was the first person I met when I started at TJ's. There is no one like Dan. I'm going to miss all jokes we use to do to each other and told. Dan was the go to guy. If I ever had problem or question about anything I would go to Dan. I'm really going to miss seeing his beat up jeep outside of TJ's. Dan wasn't just my manger he was like an uncle to me. TJ's will never be the same. ~ Deidre Augusto, Topeka, Kansas

Maria Guzman: Maria Guzman

Dan Matthews was a welcoming and gentle spirit; my heart goes out to everyone that knew him and will miss him dearly. Dan was one of the most accepting people that I knew as a teenager that appreciated the guidance that he seemed to naturally grant to everyone that met him. A protector, a friend, a friend to lean on, a wonderful boss, Dan Matthews made an indelible impact in my life, and he helped to define a very transformative period for me as a young woman in Topeka, KS. He will be missed. With Love, Maria Guzman San Francisco, CA

Shelly: Shelly

I met Dan in 1986 at Tortilla Jacks.  What I first recall about Dan was that despite his mild-mannered demeanor, he could be quite the practical joker.  He loved pulling a fast one on me and we had a lot of laughs together about how gullible I could be.  Dan also had a softer side and he demonstrated this by taking me under his wing and helping me learn my first job at the restaurant.  He also helped me study for high-school exams when I didn't know why I should bother.  He hated the fact that I went to Topeka High, but managed to look past that and get to know me as a person.  He was one of the first people to believe in me. He always had a way of encouraging me without pushing and believing in me without expectations. He used to tell me I could do anything I wanted to do and encouraged me to go to college, even when everyone else in my life thought I wouldn't or couldn't.  I remember how proud he was when I graduated from college with honors.  I think he was truly happy for others when they succeeded.  He once wrote to me "I wish you could see the good things in yourself that everyone else sees."  I wished the same for him. I hope he knows the indelible impact he has had on my life.  I am a better person for having known him. My heart is heavy and I miss him, but I am grateful for his time here.  Rest well, Dan.  You remain in my heart, now and always.
